How to choose, in three questions
Do you load it yourself, or dip it? Loading pens (Pivot, Orbit, Duplex) have a chamber you drop concentrate into. Dip pens (Terp Pen, Seahorse) have a heated tip you touch to the concentrate while you draw, like a nectar collector. Dip pens are simpler, waste less, and are easier to clean. Loading pens hit harder and don't need you to hold a jar in your other hand.
Flavor or clouds? Lower temperatures taste better and make less vapor. Higher temperatures make clouds and burn off the terpenes that make good concentrate worth buying. Pens with a real ceramic chamber and a low setting (Pivot, Terp Pen) taste better than coil pens at any price.
How much do you care about the chamber? Coils die. A pen with a replaceable atomizer or tip is a pen you keep for years; a sealed pen is a pen you replace. Every pick below has replaceable parts except the Dr. Dabber Light, which is cheap enough that it doesn't matter.
Puffco Pivot: best overall
The Pivot is what you buy when you already know you like dabbing and want it in your pocket. It uses a ceramic chamber, not a coil, so it heats the concentrate from the sides the way a rig's banger does instead of scorching it on a wire. Three heat settings cover the range from low-temp flavor to a hit that will make you cough. The body is sealed, charges over USB-C, and there's a glass adapter sold separately if you want to run it through water.
What you give up: it costs more than four of the other pens on this list combined, and the chamber needs cleaning like any chamber does. At $129.99 it is a pen for people who've already spent money on concentrates and want them to taste like they cost something. See the Pivot at Cannabox.
Boundless Terp Pen II V2: best budget, and the one we recommend most
No buttons, no settings, no chamber. You draw, the ceramic tip heats, you touch it to the concentrate. That's the whole product, and it is the reason 200-plus people bought it from Cannabox and rated it 4.7 out of 5. It tastes good because it runs cool, it wastes nothing because you only vaporize what the tip touches, and cleaning it is wiping the tip.
The limits are the design's limits. Hits are small. You need the jar in your other hand. Tips wear out, and replacements are a real cost over a year. But at $28 it is the answer to "I want to try a dab pen without committing." Terp Pen II at Cannabox.
Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus: best dip pen
Same idea as the Terp Pen with a dial on it. Variable voltage means you pick your temperature, the tips come in quartz and ceramic and swap in seconds, and there's a glass attachment so it works as a small electric nectar collector. It's the dip pen for people who found the Terp Pen too small and want to tune it.

Dr. Dabber Light: cheapest that actually works
The Light is a pen-shaped coil vape with one job: low-temperature hits that taste like the concentrate. It's tiny, it's $19.95, and Cannabox customers rate it 5 stars, which for a twenty-dollar pen is mostly a rating of how few of them break. Don't expect clouds. Ooze Duplex Pro: carts and wax on one battery
Most people who dab also buy cartridges sometimes. The Duplex Pro puts a 510 thread on one end for cartridges and a wax coil on the other, so you carry one battery instead of two. Yocan Orbit 2.0: biggest clouds under $50
The Orbit's trick is quartz balls in the chamber that spin as you draw, which spreads the heat and cools the vapor. The result is a bigger, smoother hit than a bare coil at the same voltage. If what you want from a pen is a rig-sized cloud, this is the cheapest way to get near one. It is not a flavor pen. $46. Orbit 2.0 at Cannabox.
CCELL Palm Pro: the cart battery
Included because half the people searching "dab pen" mean "a battery for my cartridge." The Palm Pro is a small, well-made 510 battery with the airflow and voltage tuned for CCELL's own cartridges, which is most of the pre-filled market. If you never load your own concentrate, buy this and skip the rest of the list. $39. Palm Pro at Cannabox.
What we left out
The G Pen Connect and Lookah Dinosaur are good and were out of stock when we checked. Puffco's Proxy and the big electric rigs are a different category; they're in our electric dab rig guide. And the 2014 pens this site used to recommend, the Cloud, the original G Pen, the Micro G, are museum pieces now; if you own one, the Terp Pen is the upgrade.
